About Jaana Sahling

Hi, I’m Jaana

I’m a Creative Art Therapist based in Melbourne, originally from Germany, with a home life that blends German, English, and Vietnamese influences. My journey with art began in childhood, when I would spend hours experimenting with paints, pencils, and paper — often using all my pocket money on art supplies. That early love for free and intuitive art-making grew into a lifelong passion and eventually into my profession.

For me, art has always been more than just creating something visual. It’s about the process — the calmness, insight, and sometimes the challenge that comes when we allow ourselves to play, explore, and express freely. Making something with our own hands can connect us to our most authentic selves, offering moments of reflection, surprise, and deeper understanding.

My professional background

I hold a Master’s in Creative and Experiential Art Therapy from the MIECAT Institute and am a professional member of PACFA. This ensures that my work is grounded in evidence-based, ethical, and trauma-informed practice. Over the years, I’ve worked with individuals and groups across diverse settings — always with a focus on creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive space.

My approach to Art Therapy

In my practice, art therapy isn’t about making “good” art — it’s about the experience. Through painting, collage, movement, voice, writing, or simply being present, you have the freedom to express yourself in whatever way feels right. Talking is always optional.

Art Therapy with me is:

  • A place for reflection and insight — explore emotions, needs, and life themes.
  • An opportunity to connect — whether one-on-one or in a group, art can foster meaningful connections.
  • Freedom to express — there are no mistakes in art, only possibilities.
  • Inclusive and welcoming — open to all ages, genders, backgrounds, and abilities.
  • A way to strengthen your intuition — supporting decision-making and authentic self-expression.
  • Mindful and grounding — take time to pause, reconnect with your senses, and express without words.
  • Open to everyone — no art experience is needed.

What matters most to me

I feel deeply grateful to share this process with those who enter my studio at the Abbotsford Convent. My aim is to hold a space where people of all ages and backgrounds feel seen, safe, and supported as they explore their creativity and inner world.
